A stylish Continental, probably Dutch, wooden handled silver ashtray or cheroot holder dating from the 19th century. The heavily made container is of rectangular shape with hinged cover with a raised leaf thumb handle and small wooden turned handle. The cover and lower edge of the container has a rope twist design while the cover has a flat domed centre finely engraved with flat and scroll patterning. This delightful box was a gift presented to my Great Aunt by an eminent Dutch family while she was engaged as their personal assistant in Mayfair in the 1960’s. The family originated from the Netherlands as did my great aunt and the box was assayed in London upon import by the family and prior to it being presented to her. The handle was originally made in Ivory however has since been replaced.
Provenance: Originally gifted to my great aunt by a reputable and notable Dutch retail family and then passed down by descent.
