Vintage Design
from its elegance and unusual style, one can recognize this splendid Chinese rug from the Art Deco period. The wool is shiny and silky, spun thicker than ordinary Chinese wool. This type of rug originated around the 1920s on the initiative of Walter Nichols, an American merchant who, having moved to China, opened a manufacture of rugs in 1924, designed for the American market, which, while retaining some classical Chinese decorations, were characterized by their decidedly innovative style. These rugs born out of the encounter between a distinctly Chinese style and the new art of interior design, so much in vogue in the West, are characterized by a renewed color taste that dares color combinations never before proposed. Cascades of flowers on a plain background with bold tones are the main feature of this production. In our rug the united background of a provocative deep red is combined with a blue band, cascades of flowers of all colors decorate the field.
