French Tortoiseshell Boulle Clock c.1860
Waisted case veneered with red tortoiseshell with finely figured brass and ormolu mounts, surmounted with an ormolu cherub. Glazed viewing panel to the front of the case with front ormolu mount. The back door and inside of the case also carrying Boulle decoration.
Brass bezel opening to a chased and gilded dial with segmented blue enamel Roman numerals and original ‘blued’ steel hands.
Eight day French movement with outside countwheel by Japy Freres striking the hours and halves on a silvered bell. The backplate marked ‘ Rollin A Paris’. C.1860
‘Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world’ by Brian Loomes lists Rollin as working in Paris in the mid 19th century.
