Antique Large Carved Wood Gilt Sheaf of Wheat and Moon Wall Mirror – Italy

A monumental Regency gilt-carved wood wall mirror with a sheaf of wheat and moon motif. This extra large mirror will be fabulous hung on a wall above a mantle or in an entryway. The body of the mirror is rectangular and surrounded by a gilt hand-carved border. The top features a trompe l’oeil carved sheaf of wheat at the center. A garland of carved gilt leaves sits behind it. And perhaps the most interesting detail of all are the scepters that flank either side. On the top left, sits a scepter with a crescent moon at the top. And on the right, a scepter with what looks to be a tassel. In Italy, the crescent moon’s horn shape is an emblem of the Roman goddess Diana and was thought to protect people from the Evil Eye. People wore the crescent moon, hung it on animals, or nailed it above doors. (Or in this case, incorporated it into their decor) The back of the piece is marked with “Made in Italy” carved into the wood in two different spots. It also has a sticker that says the same and is affixed at the back near the top.
