A good and unusual pair of bird’s-eye maple commodes by Zignago & Picasso, each of rectangular form with cut corners and four drawers, with the original grey marbles set into the top, decorated with solid kingwood mouldings, handles and key plat W, signed on the lock Zignago & Picasso, Italian, circa 1880.
Footnote:
They bear the signature of the Zignago Picasso manufacturing,
Who were among the exhibitors participating in the Colombian Exhibition,
held in Genoa in 1892, along with the leading furniture makers of the era.
This particular maker was much appreciated by the Genoese.
The quality and construction of this lovely pair of commodes at first glance suggests they were English made.
The fine dovetails, mahogany drab bottoms of the finest quality and the panelled backs all suggest English construction. But on-closer examination they are continental but superbly made and quit possibly for the Colombian exhibition.
